What to expect: the therapy process
Individual Therapy
Step 1: Consultation (15 min)
The first step in your therapy journey is your free consultation phone call. You can book this call using the link below, by filling out the contact form under the “contact” page on my website, or by simply calling the phone number on the bottom of this page. In this call we will discuss your concerns, your goals for therapy, and information about me (ex. areas I specialize in and some of the techniques I will use in therapy). The goal of this call is to determine if therapy with me is the best fit for you and will help you achieve your goals.
Step 2: Intake Appointment (50 min)
If it’s decided based on your initial consultation that this is the best fit for you and your needs - we will then schedule your intake appointment. In your first appointment we will begin building the therapeutic relationship and go over your concerns and various aspects of your life in more detail. The information gathered during this appointment will help me create a treatment plan that is tailored to your unique needs. Your treatment plan will contain specific goals and objectives which will be used to inform our work together and to measure your treatment progress over time.
Step 3: Follow-Up Appointments (50 min)
Subsequent sessions will focus on using the most effective interventions for you based on your individual needs and treatment goals. Your goals and needs in therapy may change during this time and that is okay. Ultimately, you are in the drivers seat. Being vocal about your needs and concerns during our work together will be beneficial to your care. I may use measurement tools to track your progress between sessions - including evidence based measurements for anxiety (ex. GAD-7) and depression (PHQ-9) - these assessments will be sent to you using the secure client portal and can usually be completed within 5 minutes.
Final Step: Termination
Ideally, clients will begin to notice a change in their symptoms after 2-3 sessions. Once your treatment goals have been reached - your treatment will be terminated. Termination session(s) will focus on reviewing your treatment goals and progress and on planning for future challenges. Termination can be an emotional process - a time of celebration and a time of change for the therapeutic relationship. In your termination session(s) your clinician will tend to these emotions and provide you with support.
Couples Therapy
Step 1: Consultation (15 Min)
The first step in your couples therapy journey is your free consultation phone call. In this call we will discuss your concerns, your goals for therapy, and information about my practice – to help you determine if this the best fit for you as a couple.
Step 2: First Assessment Session (50 Min)
In your first session as a couple, we will go over your concerns in more detail, the history of your relationship, and get a better idea of how you and your spouse navigate conflict together.
Step 3: Online Questionnaires
In between your first assessment session and your contracting/feedback session (step 5) – you will each be sent online questionnaires through “Gottman connect”. Once completed, these questionnaires will give me a thorough explanation of your areas of challenge and your areas of strength as a couple and will be an important factor in developing your treatment plan.
Step 4: Individual Assessment Sessions (Two 50 Min Sessions)
In your individual sessions you will be asked to give your own explanation of what you are observing in your relationship with your spouse. In this session, we will also discuss your family history, your history of relationships, your commitment to the relationship, and your individual expectations, fears, and hopes regarding the relationship.
Step 5: Assessment Session – Feedback (50 Min)
In your second session as a couple – after you’ve completed your first conjoint session, your individual sessions, and your online questionnaires – you will be provided with information on Gottman’s “Sound Relationship House” theory, and we will then go over the overall health of your relationship based on this concept and your assessments and then discuss your treatment plan.
Step 6: Follow-Up Sessions (50 Min)
Subsequent sessions will focus on using the most effective interventions based on your needs as a couple in order to accomplish your treatment goals.
Additional fees
Couples therapy sessions are $135 per 50-minute session including the individual sessions. In addition, couples will be given the option to purchase either the Gottman “Relationship check up” questionnaires through Gottman Connect for $39.00 per couple, the Gottman “Relationship Builder” for $149 per couple, or a combination of both the Check up and the Builder (recommended) for $188. The relationship builder gives you unlimited access to personalized Gottman modules which will allow you to learn about and practice powerful Gottman Method concepts outside of sessions, and will allow me, as your therapist, to track your progress with the different modules. Utilizing the Gottman Relationship Builder between sessions will help to accelerate and streamline your treatment – enabling you to apply therapy concepts more effectively in your day to day life and reach your treatment goals for couples therapy sooner.
